Can a Garden Room Be Used as an Extension?

    May 2019 Insight

    Black timber garden room

From time to time, we are asked if our Modular buildings can be used as an extension to a property. As a company with great admiration for contemporary architecture, we love to see a thoughtfully-designed addition or adaption to a property. However, here are five reasons why we don’t do extensions and why our garden rooms ‘stand alone’:

    1/ Context

Good architecture acknowledges the character and fabric of the existing building, whilst considering the impact any new addition will make. This is a great job for an architect, but one that needs time and investment to ensure the right solution is found. As a garden room or garden office, our Modular buildings are always detached, and therefore confidently stand alone as new additions in their own right, next to any kind of architecture.

    2/ Ease

When we set out to create the original 3rdSpace Modular system, we were driven by the idea of hassle-free building, yet one that delivered high-quality, beautifully detailed spaces. By keeping the system as a free-standing, independent product we are able to give fixed price models, sensible lead times and in most cases you will not require planning permission.

    3/ Speed

The Modular system is quick to install, without any compromise on build quality, materials or finish. Certain parts of the process (such as asking for a power connection back to your house prior to our team arriving) enable this to be as smooth as possible. A typical project takes only 3-5 days to complete, from arriving with the pre-fabricated wall, floor and roof panels, to handing you the keys to your new space.

    4/ Detachment

We always like to keep in touch with our customers and hear how the new space is working for their family or business. The feedback we hear most often is that they love the detachment, or as one 3rdSpace owner, Anna, put it: ‘For me, the biggest thing, apart from the fact that it’s utterly beautiful, is the walk from the house to here, those few steps away make such a difference – I’m so productive in here’.

    5/ Move

It is not uncommon for our team to bring every part of building through a front door to reach an otherwise inaccessible rear garden. Aside from being perfect for properties with challenging access, the Modular system is also designed to be fully ‘demountable’ – so if you have come to cherish your 3rdSpace but need to move house, it is good to know there is always the option to take it with you. Another good reason why our buildings stand alone.
