3rdSpace was established in 2010, with the vision of designing a new kind of micro-architecture that could provide high-quality spaces, built to last and available to all.
Since founding the company, many small buildings have been produced for customers in London and around the UK, giving families and businesses more space to grow as their needs expand. Our products have been featured in high-profile publications, including Design Milk, Wall Street Journal and Elle Decoration.
“Modular design is the backbone to every 3rdSpace project. By designing with this in mind, each space is beautifully-crafted, but with all the benefits of off-site construction, including quick on-site assembly and consistently high quality.”
The original 3rdSpace Modular design typifies this clever approach, where each modular component is designed to be universal and integral. Wall panels, for example, come to site fully insulated, with cladding, membranes and interior finishes ready applied, and neatly slot into a solid wood post and beam structure.
This method also has the added benefit of being perfect for sites where access is challenging (such as through the house) alongside being fully demountable, meaning it is possible to dismantle and relocate the building if ever needed.
“From the very start, we placed great value on the of use of wood. Firstly for sustainability, also because wood locks in carbon, and when used properly inside a building can continue to provide cleaner air. The other important reason is the aesthetic that comes from a well-designed timber space – providing a calm, naturally light interior.”
Openness to daylight is a key factor in the design of all 3rdSpace products. With full-height glazing panels, a naturally-lit environment can be achieved, which in turn promotes creativity and well-being, along with the added benefit of less electricity use. Every detail in a 3rdSpace design has been considered, and there is no detail without reason.
“…I couldn’t wish for a more intelligently designed and beautifully built space to work in. It’s going to go on giving me pleasure for years to come.”
The company was founded by Paul Grindley and Ben Couture, based on a shared belief in the values and benefits of good design.
Paul is an award-winning architect and comes from a family of architects, who work together at their practice in Milton Keynes. Ben has a background in designing and making across a wide range of scales, from furniture systems to exhibition spaces.
The first ever 3rdSpace was borne from a need to provide a garden room and storage space for a growing family home, whilst overcoming difficult site access and limited room for building.
Over a period of two years following this, a market-ready product was prototyped and developed, to meet high standards and allow a range of possible uses. 3rdSpace garden rooms continue to be designed and manufactured in the UK.
